Think about a piece of art: a painting, sculpture or print, for example. It can become a real feature, and doesn’t have to cost a fortune.
So, how do you start?
First, set yourself a budget. If you’re buying for pleasure rather than an investment, decide what you can afford to spend without necessarily getting a financial return.
Next, do a little homework online. The art section of eBay will give you an indication of what types of art are available, and how much. The website for Arts Review Magazine (www.artreview.com.au) will give you the expert view.
Then, visit a few local galleries, get to know the owner, and explain what you’re looking for. Also check out any artist-run spaces, or the end-of-year degree show at your local art school.
Finally, when you find something you like, go for it: trust your instincts. If you decide you don’t like it after living with it, you can always sell. But if you keep putting off a decision, you’ll never start.
